What if the Terrorists were Hippies?
NEW YORK CITY - When a small group of Muslims held a hunger-strike in front of the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001, many had no idea their cause would grow into a worldwide sensation. In fact some say the movement changed American foreign policy.
"America's recent closing of several military bases in the Middle East can be traced directly to this nonviolent movement," said Dr. Scott Ambrovin, a professor specializing in Middle East studies at Stanford University.
The world will never forget the footage of young Muslims joining hands in front of the World Trade Center, some of them stuffing flowers into the rifle barrels of riot police arriving on the scene.
Several businesspeople on their way to work jeered the protestors, but others joined hands with them, denouncing the need for a strong U.S. military presence among such a peace-loving people overseas.
"Couldn't our troops do more good elsewhere?" asked secretary Amanda Stroutski who works on the 87th floor of the WTC. "These guys are following in the footsteps of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., I think we should listen." Stroutski continued.
Professor Ambrovin pointed out that the Muslims understand how to manipulate the American system: "Convince voters to be sympathetic with the cause," he said.
"Some radical groups of the past used violence, only to find relatively few followers, nothing like the mainstream support these Muslims have achieved in such a short time using peaceful resistance," Ambrovin stated.
Senators and congressmen quickly heeded the call of voters expressing support for the young Muslims. Most called on the military to scale back its presence on the Arab peninsula.
A new super-group of musicians, some who participated in "We Are the World" from the 1980s, are recording a new track that echoes the sentiments of the Muslim protesters.
"The Cold War is over, the world is mostly at peace, the message of these Muslims is spreading like wildfire, why do we need to be wasting tax dollars over there when there are problems at home?" asked Jerry Schumanko, a recent convert to Islam.
Schumanko said his conversion to Islam was inspired by meeting so many peace-loving Muslims. "Who could not help but be interested?" Schumanko said. "After all, you catch more bees with honey than vinegar."
President Bush announced he would be extending his stay in Afghanistan, a country where the beliefs of the young Muslim protesters first blossomed in the remote training camps.
Bush, in Afghanistan to announce more financial aid for the Palestinians, visited some of the camps where Muslims learned to use nonviolent resistance to affect world policy.
"I'm having a lot of fun here," said Bush, sporting a red, white and blue turban. "They're nice folks. They may resemble unbathed hippies, but at least they're not violent. Just imagine if they would have attacked us to spread their message, I'd have bombed every one of these training camps to smithereens, and probably replaced their government."
